PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY

EXPERIENCE

Guy Carpenter / Oct 2014 - Present

VP, Visual Communication Design

I currently lead visual communication design for Guy Carpenter’s North America Sales team. Our primary focus is acquiring new and retaining existing business through the Request for Proposal (RFP) process. I work with account teams and subject matter experts to help  translate their message into a clear, concise, visual story. In addition to producing a wide variety of sales and marketing collateral, I also participate in training efforts surrounding the company’s visual toolkit and basic design principles.

Aetna / Aug 2010 - Oct 2014

Proposal Design Manager

I was recruited in 2010 by Aetna’s Medicaid business unit to design for their proposal team in Phoenix, AZ. I worked to elevate the company’s design aesthetic, resulting in a product that stood out amongst our competitors and increased overall win rate. I also designed and implemented a process improvement initiative that refined the overall workflow and ultimately increased efficiency, quality, and standardization.

InnovateLife / Aug 2008 - Dec 2010

Graphic Designer and Co-founder

I got my start as one of four co-founders of an entrepreneurial venture called InnovateLife in Scottsdale, AZ. Our team developed the concept for a pre-hospital medical device (Kelvin) that would reduce the risk of brain damage in individuals suffering from cardiac arrest by reducing core body temperature to levels of mild hypothermia. Kelvin was featured on the Bloomberg series “The Innovators” for the use of biomimicry in its design and was ultimately awarded $38K in grant funding over a two year period. Work included product research and development, branding, proposal design, and writing.

DESIGN PERSPECTIVE

Function should be obvious

Before I can put pencil to paper, I first have to determine the message. The way I communicate that message should only be as complex as it needs to be. If my audience has to struggle to decipher meaning, then I have not done my job.

Collaboration requires empathy

While there will always be pieces of me in the work, ultimately what I’m creating is not for me.  The design process is about listening, learning, and putting someone else’s goals before your own personal preferences to bring their vision to life.

Curiosity fuels creativity

As children we are uninhibited, endlessly asking “why?” and “how?”. As adults I believe that spark still exists. If you allow yourself to open your mind and experiment, the most wonderful and unexpected ideas will rush in.
